"That's why they're so enjoyable to me" - Laura Woods explains Arsenal's joy this season as club tops the Premier League

Laura Woods joined Alan Shearer in heaping praise on Arsenal for their blistering start to the season.

The Gunners held on to top spot in the Premier League table following Sunday’s 3-0 win at Brentford, having won six out of their first seven games.

The only blemish of Mikel Arteta’s side’s record was the 3-1 defeat at Manchester United earlier this month but his side quickly reverted back to winning ways, showing a resilience reminiscent of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

Shearer led the plaudits for the Gunners in the wake of Sunday’s victory and Arsenal fan Woods concurred with the Newcastle United legend, just over a year after a limp Arsenal side were resoundingly beaten 2-0 by Brentford.

“There’s so many compliments I can make to that team,” the talkSPORT Breakfast host said.

“I thought Mikel Arteta summed it up really well talking about last season. I was at that game when Arsenal lost at Brentford in the first game of the season and there was no spirit, no heart, no desire.

“[Arteta] said, ‘I don’t look at that game as an awful day, I look back at it as a building character day.’

“I thought that really summed him up and summed up that team and Alan Shearer said it on Match of the Day. He said from the very beginning they were at it. They were hungry, they had desire, their attitude was at it.

Woodsy, like all other Arsenal fans, is loving watching her team perform this season

“They look like players who are competing to win every single ball and I just thought, yeah, that’s why I’m enjoying them so much.”

Arsenal’s upturn in form has coincided with the arrival of a number of key faces that have bolstered Arteta’s squad.

All three of the Gunners’ goals at Brentford were scored by players who didn’t feature at the club last season.

William Saliba spent last season on loan at Marseille but has been a revelation this term after his future in north London looked in doubt.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus continued his good form, netting his fourth goal of the season with Fabio Vieira scoring his first for the club following his move from Porto.

The Gunners face a true test of their title credentials after the international break with both Tottenham and Liverpool visiting the Emirates Stadium early next month.
