Nate Diaz has given fight fans a glimpse into his perspective of the backstage melee that led to the UFC 279 pre-fight press conference being cancelled.
The MMA legend took fans behind the scenes of the wild UFC 279 fight week in his latest video blog which gave a clearer picture of what caused the UFC to take the unprecedented step of scrapping an ongoing press event.
After arriving at the arena, Diaz and his team get into it with an unidentified figure.
Two members of his crew throw water bottles at the man, who is presumably Khamzat Chimaev, while UFC staff, security, and an off-duty Las Vegas police officer separate the two parties.
“F*** your team, b****! Team USA, motherf*****,” Diaz can be heard saying during the melee that contributed to UFC president Dana White calling off a press conference for the first time ever.
The media session, staged to promote the event, was initially delayed by 30 minutes before White appeared to tell the gathered press and fans that he’d be bringing fighters out in pairs, explaining it was a real ‘s*** show’ back there, nodding backstage.
First out were Kevin Holland and Daniel Rodriguez to answer a few questions before they were let go, with Holland reiterating his boss’ comments when quizzed on what was going on.
It is believed that Holland and Chimaev initially got into a physical altercation backstage that involved Darren Till’s training partner kicking ‘Trailblazer’ in the chest.
‘Borz’ then got in a separate scuffle with Diaz and his team before the press conference was cancelled and things got even crazier the following day.
Chimaev badly missed weight and was pulled from his fight with Diaz, which was supposed to headline the pay-per-view event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
After several hours of negotiations, White managed to save the show by matching Diaz up against Ferguson in the headline spot, while Chimaev was still able to compete despite coming in 7.5lbs overweight as he fought Holland in a grudge match.
Daiz’s video blog also gives fans a brief glimpse into his weight cut and the immediate aftermath of Chimaev’s weight miss which put the entire UFC 279 fight card in jeopardy.
